TIG Torches

Choosing a tig torch comes down to amperage rating and cable length: a WP17 or WP17V for general fabrication up to around 150A, or a WP18 or WP26 for heavier, higher-amperage work. Every tig torch below is a complete assembly, ready to connect to a compatible TIG welding machine’s torch connector.

Five tig torches are in stock in Kempton Park and priced direct, from R1,200 for the WP17 up to R2,300 for the WP26. Valve versions (WP17V, WP26V) add an on-torch gas valve for manual gas control on machines without torch-triggered gas solenoids. Cable length runs 4m or 8m depending on how far you need to reach from the machine.

We have built and repaired TIG torches in our own workshop since 2002, so if your existing torch has failed or you are setting up a new TIG welding machine, bring it in or send us a photo and we will match the tig torch to your setup.

WP17, WP18 or WP26 — which amperage rating?

WP17 and WP17V are rated for general fabrication up to around 150A DC or 100A AC, the most common choice for workshop and DIY TIG work. WP18 is water-cooled and suited to sustained higher-amperage work where an air-cooled torch would overheat. WP26 and WP26V step up further, common on higher-output machines and heavier production work. Match the torch rating to your machine's maximum output, not just the job in front of you today.

Standard torch, or valve version?

The V-suffix torches (WP17V, WP26V) add an on-torch gas valve, letting you control gas flow manually at the torch rather than relying on the machine's own gas solenoid. This is mainly useful on older or simpler machines without torch-triggered gas control, or when you want a manual post-flow purge. If your machine already triggers gas automatically from the trigger, the valve is a convenience, not a necessity.

4m or 8m cable?

A 4m cable suits a torch that stays close to a bench-mounted or portable machine. An 8m cable gives you the reach to move around a larger workpiece or across a workshop bay without repositioning the machine itself, at the cost of a heavier, less manoeuvrable torch. Choose based on your actual workspace, not the longest option available.

What's included, and what wears out

Each torch here is a complete assembly — torch body, head, handle and cable — ready to connect to your machine. The wearing parts (ceramic cup, collet, collet body, back cap) are consumables, not covered by buying a new torch body, and are stocked separately in our TIG torch consumables range once yours start to wear.

Why buy your tig torch here

We have built and repaired TIG torches in our own Kempton Park workshop since 2002. Every torch here is sold and priced direct, in stock locally, with no reseller markup added on top — and if it needs a repair or a consumable swap later, the people who sold it to you are the people who fix it.

Common questions

Can you TIG weld with a torch?
Yes, the torch is the handheld part of a TIG welding setup that holds the tungsten electrode and delivers shielding gas, but it needs a compatible TIG welding machine to supply power and gas. A torch on its own can't weld; it's one component of the full system.
Can I use TIG without gas?
No, not in any practical sense. TIG welding relies on shielding gas, almost always argon, to protect both the tungsten electrode and the weld pool from air. Without it the tungsten contaminates quickly and the weld oxidises, unlike MIG, where a gasless flux-cored option exists.
Can I teach myself to TIG weld?
Yes, many welders are self-taught, though TIG has a steeper learning curve than MIG since you control the torch, filler rod and foot pedal or trigger amperage separately. Starting with mild steel before moving to stainless or aluminium, and practising on scrap first, makes the learning curve easier.
What amperage torch do I need?
Match the torch to your machine's maximum output, not the job in front of you today. A WP17 covers most work up to around 150A DC; step up to a WP18 or WP26 if your machine outputs more, or if you regularly run longer, higher-amperage passes that would overheat a lighter torch.
Why does my TIG torch have a valve version?
The valve version (WP17V, WP26V) lets you control gas flow manually at the torch, useful on older or simpler machines without torch-triggered gas solenoids, or when you want manual control over post-flow purge. If your machine already triggers gas from the trigger, the valve is optional.
Do I need a water-cooled TIG torch?
Only if you're running sustained high-amperage passes that would overheat an air-cooled torch. For occasional or moderate-amperage workshop use, an air-cooled torch like the WP17 is simpler, lighter and needs no separate cooling unit or water-cooled machine.
