MIG Welding Machines

Choosing a mig welding machine comes down to amperage and phase power: a single-phase inverter for workshop and site use, or a three-phase industrial unit for continuous production runs. Every mig welding machine below feeds wire automatically through the gun, making it the fastest process to learn and the best all-rounder for general steel fabrication.

✓ Since 2002 ✓ In-house torch workshop ✓ Air Products gas agent ✓ Direct-to-consumer pricing

Three mig welding machines are in stock in Kempton Park and priced direct, from R6,785 for the 220A DABU 225 Pulse up to R31,625 for the 500A DABU MIG-500 industrial unit built for heavy production work. The AWS PrimiMIG 251C sits between the two at 250A, with stick and lift-TIG modes built in for occasional cross-process jobs.

We have built and repaired MIG, TIG and stick welding equipment in our own workshop since 2002, and we are an Air Products gas agent — so your mig welding machine, its shielding gas and its consumables are sorted in the same place you bought it. And if it ever needs service, the people who sold it to you are the people who fix it.

Gasless or gas-shielded MIG?

A gasless (flux-cored) mig welding machine needs no gas bottle and copes better with wind and rust on outdoor or site work, at the cost of more spatter, smoke and clean-up than gas-shielded MIG. Gas-shielded MIG, running argon or an argon/CO2 mix, gives a cleaner, quieter weld with less post-weld grinding, but only works properly indoors or in still air — any breeze disperses the shielding gas and lets porosity into the weld. All three machines in this range run gas-shielded MIG; check each product's own attributes for whether gasless flux-cored wire is also supported before assuming it is.

How much amperage and what phase power?

The DABU 225 Pulse covers 30-220A on a standard single-phase household or small-business supply, suited to workshop and site use. The AWS PrimiMIG 251C steps up to 250A, still single-phase, with added stick and lift-TIG modes for occasional cross-process jobs. The DABU MIG-500 is a different class entirely — a 500A, three-phase industrial unit built for continuous, high-duty-cycle production work. Three-phase power isn't available at most homes and small workshops, so confirm your supply before considering it; it's the right machine for a production floor, not a home workshop upgrade.

What does a mig welding machine cost?

Our three mig welding machines run from R6,785 for the 220A DABU 225 Pulse to R31,625 for the 500A DABU MIG-500 industrial unit, with the 250A AWS PrimiMIG 251C at R13,800 in between. Price here scales mainly with amperage, duty cycle and phase power — a three-phase industrial machine costs several times a single-phase workshop unit for that reason, not because of the brand.

MIG, or something that also does TIG and stick?

The AWS PrimiMIG 251C runs MIG alongside stick and lift-TIG from the same power source, so it also appears in our multi-process welders range. If your work is purely MIG, a dedicated single-process machine like the DABU 225 Pulse gives simpler controls for the same amperage; if it varies, the cross-process option is worth the small premium.

What you'll need beyond the machine

A mig welding machine on its own is only the power source. Budget for shielding gas and a regulator if running gas-shielded MIG, the correct wire diameter and spool for your machine's wire feeder, and spare contact tips, gas nozzles and torch liners as consumables wear. Browse our MIG torch consumables range, stocked alongside the machines.

Why buy your mig welding machine here

We have built and repaired MIG, TIG and stick welding equipment in our own Kempton Park workshop since 2002, and we are an Air Products gas agent — useful the day your mig welding machine needs argon or an argon/CO2 blend delivered alongside it. Every machine here is sold and priced direct, in stock locally, with no reseller markup added on top.

Common questions

What is a MIG welding machine?
A MIG welding machine feeds a continuous wire electrode through a gun while shielding gas or a flux-cored wire protects the weld pool from air. It's the fastest welding process to learn, since the wire feeds automatically, and it's the standard choice for general steel fabrication, repairs and production work.
What is a MIG welder best for?
A MIG welder is best for general steel fabrication, repairs and production work where speed and ease matter most. The automatic wire feed makes it the easiest process to learn, and gas-shielded MIG gives a clean finish on mild steel, making it the standard choice for most workshop jobs.
Which is stronger, MIG or TIG?
Weld strength depends more on technique, joint prep and correct settings than on process choice, and both MIG and TIG can produce full-strength welds. TIG gives finer control and a cleaner finish, useful on thin or precision work; MIG is faster and more forgiving for general steel fabrication.
What is the best MIG welder in South Africa?
There's no single best MIG welder, the right choice depends on your amperage needs, power supply and budget. In our range, the DABU 225 Pulse (R6,785) suits general workshop and site use, while the DABU MIG-500 (R31,625) is built for three-phase industrial production work.
How much does a mig welding machine cost?
Amalgum Welding Shop's mig welding machines run from R6,785 for a 220A single-phase unit to R31,625 for a 500A three-phase industrial machine, all in stock in Kempton Park with no reseller markup. Price scales mainly with amperage, duty cycle and phase power, not brand name.
Is gasless or gas MIG better?
Neither is universally better. Gasless (flux-cored) MIG needs no gas bottle and copes with wind and rust on outdoor work, while gas-shielded MIG gives a cleaner weld with less spatter but only works indoors or in still air. Choose based on where and what you're welding.
Does a mig welding machine need three-phase power?
Only our largest unit, the 500A DABU MIG-500, needs three-phase power, which isn't available at most homes and small workshops. The 220A DABU 225 Pulse and 250A AWS PrimiMIG 251C both run on standard single-phase power, covering the large majority of workshop and site welding needs.
