MIG Torch Consumables

MIG torch consumables are the wear parts every MIG welder goes through regardless of the machine driving the torch: contact tips, gas nozzles, diffusers, liners, swan necks and tip adaptors. The MIG torch consumables below are Binzel-style, sized for the MB15, MB25, MB36, MB40 and MB501 torch families used across our MIG welding machine range.

Ten MIG torch consumables are in stock in Kempton Park and priced direct, from R5 for a neck spring to R195 for a 4m graphite Teflon liner. Contact tips and liners wear fastest on a busy machine and are worth keeping spares of; swan necks and gas nozzles are a less frequent replacement.

Which torch family does your machine use?

Our MIG torch consumables are Binzel-style, sized for five torch families: MB15 and MB25 (lighter-duty, common on entry-level and mid-range MIG machines), and MB36, MB40 and MB501 (heavier-duty, higher-amperage torches). Check your torch's own markings or your machine's included-equipment list before ordering — a swan neck or gas nozzle sized for MB15 will not fit an MB40 torch, and contact tips are thread-specific too.

Contact tip size — thread and wire diameter both matter

A contact tip has two size dimensions that both need to match: the thread (M6 for MB15/MB25, M8 for MB36/MB40/MB501) and the wire diameter it's bored for, from 0.8mm up to 1.6mm in our range. A tip bored too large for your wire causes an unstable arc; too small and the wire jams. Match both dimensions to your machine and wire spool, not just one.

What wears out first

Contact tips wear fastest, since the wire drags through them on every weld, and are the most frequently replaced part on a busy machine. Liners wear next, especially with softer wire, and a worn liner causes feeding problems before it fully fails. Gas nozzles, diffusers and swan necks last considerably longer and are a less frequent, bigger-ticket replacement.

Buying more than one part at a time

If your torch needs several parts replaced at once, check they all belong to the same family before ordering. An MB36 torch commonly needs a matching MB36 swan neck, diffuser and nozzle together, and mixing parts from different families is the fastest way to end up with a torch that won't seal or feed correctly.

What are the consumables used in MIG welding?
The core MIG torch consumables are the contact tip, gas nozzle (shroud), gas diffuser and liner. The contact tip guides and energises the wire, the diffuser directs shielding gas evenly, the nozzle shapes the gas coverage over the weld pool, and the liner guides the wire through the torch cable.
What are the essential supplies needed for MIG welding?
Beyond the machine itself, you need MIG wire matched to your material and diameter, shielding gas (or gasless flux-cored wire), a contact tip bored for that wire size, and the usual PPE: an auto-darkening helmet, gloves and appropriate clothing.
What are the different types of MIG torches?
MIG torches are grouped by torch family and duty rating, commonly MB15 and MB25 for lighter-duty machines, and MB36, MB40 and MB501 for heavier-duty, higher-amperage work. Each family uses its own matched swan neck, nozzle, diffuser and contact tip, so parts don't interchange between families.

How do I know which contact tip I need?
A contact tip is sized by thread (M6 for MB15/MB25, M8 for MB36/MB40/MB501) and by wire diameter, from 0.8mm to 1.6mm in our range. Check both dimensions against your torch and wire spool; getting either one wrong causes feeding or arc problems.
How often should I replace my MIG torch liner?
There's no fixed interval; replace it when you notice feeding problems, wire birdnesting, or a rougher arc that a new contact tip doesn't fix. Softer wire and dirtier working conditions wear a liner faster than clean mild steel wire in a workshop environment.
