Which thread size do I need — M6 or M8?
M6 is the smaller thread. M8 is the larger one. Check the tip holder on your torch first — the wrong thread simply won't screw in. M6 tips fit an MB15 air-cooled torch and an MB25 aluminium torch. M8 tips fit an MB40 air-cooled torch and an MB501 water-cooled torch.
How do I match a contact tip to my wire diameter?
The tip bore has to match the wire diameter exactly. A 0.8mm wire needs a 0.8mm tip. A 1.6mm wire needs a 1.6mm tip. An oversized tip lets the wire wander. That disrupts current transfer. My contact tip doesn't fit — how do I check whether my torch is M6 or M8?
Check the torch's tip holder or model markings — don't guess from wire size alone. MB15 and MB25-style torches commonly take M6. MB36 can be configured for either M6 or M8. MB40 and MB501-style torches commonly take M8. South African welding suppliers list M6 and M8 as separate products for exactly this reason. So confirm your torch's thread before ordering.
What happens if I use the wrong size contact tip for my wire?
An oversized tip lets the wire wander inside the bore. That causes an unstable arc and poor current transfer. An undersized tip is tighter than the wire. That causes feed resistance and jamming. Match the tip's stated diameter to your wire diameter exactly.
Why does my MIG wire keep burning back into the contact tip?
Burnback is usually a wire-feed problem, not a tip fault on its own. Common causes include:
- Wire speed set too slow for the arc
- A worn or contaminated liner
- The torch held too close to the weld puddle
Any of these can let the arc climb back up into the tip. A worn or loose contact tip makes the problem worse. So if burnback keeps happening after checking feed speed and liner condition, replacing the tip is often the fastest fix.
How often should MIG contact tips be replaced?
Contact tips are a wear part, not a one-time fit. Replace one as soon as the bore visibly enlarges or turns oval-shaped. Also replace it if the arc becomes unstable or the wire feed roughens up. Keeping spares on hand avoids a workshop stoppage mid-job.
Can I use an oversized contact tip if my wire quality is inconsistent?
It's sometimes done as a workaround for wire with an inconsistent outer diameter. But it isn't the correct long-term fix. It trades current-transfer quality for smoother feeding. Matching the tip to the wire's actual diameter remains the reliable choice.
